Winter Boots Women

How to Choose Winter Boots

In certain climates, choosing the right winter boots women is an important part of stocking a winter wardrobe. Your toes are more likely to get frostbite if they are not properly protected. Additionally, depending on your activity, the right winter boots can be worn for different occasions. Read on to learn how to choose winter boots women.

  1. Consider your climate. If your climate rarely reaches below the freezing point, you don't need the protection that comes from certain types of winter boots. In cases of mild climates, you will simply want to look for a winter boot that is rated to 32 degrees F. If you purchase something rated for colder climates, your feet will end up sweating and that could be uncomfortable.
  2. Look at a durable low temperature rated boot if you are in an exceedingly cold climate. Two good types of winter boots that have lines rated for very low temperatures are Sorel and Muck boots. See Resources below for their websites. Sorel boots are rated for temperatures as low as -25 degrees F while Muck boots are rated for temperatures as low as -40 degrees F. If you are in a slightly warmer climate, a good brand to consider are Ugg boots. See Resources below for a link to their website.
  3. Consider your activity level. If you are highly active, your blood circulation will help keep your extremities warmer, therefore you will not need boots rated for the lowest temperatures. For example, if you are purchasing winter boots primarily for early morning vigorous exercise walks, you would not need a boot that is rated for as low of a temperature if you are just using the boots during moderate or low level activity.
  4. Look at the terrain on which you will be wearing the boots. Certain boots have soles made specifically for traction on icy terrain, while other boots are good for wear on mountainous terrain, concrete or even indoor terrain, if you will be wearing them throughout the day rather than just outside.
  5. Consider your fashion choices. If you will be wearing the boots for daily wear, you should consider purchasing a neutral color winter boot in tan or beige rather than a brighter color. This will give you the widest range of use so you don't have to purchase multiple pairs.
  6. Look at typical weather conditions. If it rains frequently, you should consider purchasing a pair of waterproof winter boots. Sorel and Muck Boots both offer a lines of fully waterproof boots for use in wet weather conditions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Certain wool-lined boots are not made to be worn with socks, so you will want to consider that when making your purchase decision.

Winter Boots Women Fashion Tips

For some, winter is an exciting time when it is most appropriate and comfortable to don a fashionable coat or new pair of boots. For others, winter is a crisis that requires a yearly fashion intervention. If you have the winter fashion blues, it is easy to get up-to-date on popular winter fashions for women, and to educate yourself on how to properly fit winter clothes for your unique frame.

Footwear
Bohemian boots are a practical choice for women's winter fashion. Bohemian-style boots have tops higher up the leg for the cold winter climate. Thigh-high and knee high boots are a popular shoe trend for the winter months, the toasty thing to wear on your feet until the thaw for the spring.

Coats
The short coat is a popular choice for winter wear, most often appearing in solid, thick fabrics with a professional office look. Long coats are out, as is fur. High-class faux-fur can keep you warm and fashionable, and complements an evening dress nicely. Coats should be chosen based on the climate first, and fashionability second. If you live in a particularly cold winter climate, choose a wool peacoat in a color that matches most of your wardrobe. A grey peacoat with accents of color can complement a versatile wardrobe nicely.

Bottoms
Leggings are a great way to keep warm and express yourself during the winter season. There are many options for leggings, including tights, thigh-highs, knee-highs, and many choices of fabric. Leggings come in a variety of colors and can be used to accessorize a variety of winter looks. For an edgy look, choose an original fabric pattern, or do some damage to your leggings for a tattered bohemian style. Tattered panty hose are a popular twist in winter dance club fashion and on the designer runways.

Body Shape
Winter clothes can look bulky, so make sure you choose clothing that flatters your shape and balances out your form. If you are heavy up top, a-line skirts will balance your bottom with your top. Short coats can make a short girl seem more leggy and tall, while long coats can have the effect of shortening a too-tall frame. If you are thin up top and wide on the bottom, an attractively patterned businesswoman's coat can add balance to the shape of your body.

Weather Emergencies
If you live in a wet or snowy area, always have a pair of galoshes, a raincoat or an umbrella on hand to protect your winter clothes from weather damage. There are many fashionable raincoats available.
